With so many browser options out there, it’s hard to choose one that does what others don’t, but with the new Opera Mini 8 this concern may be a thing of the past. Revamped from the ground up, the new Opera Mini aims to take the reins once again as the best mobile web browser for iOS.

Continuing its focus on data compression to save users from having their cellular allowance overtaxed, Opera Software is offering even more options to control the way Opera Mini fetches data from the web.

There’s a standard Opera Mini mode that offers 90% compression and data savings in areas with poor coverage and tough network conditions; Opera Turbo, which saves slightly less data than Opera Mini mode but offers better website compatibility; and an OFF switch for a no-compression, straight-to-the-source experience with maximum website compatibility.

“You can set the different modes as you see fit, e.g., disabling compression on your workplace’s high-speed Wi-Fi, using Opera Turbo with your regular data plan and Opera Mini when traveling abroad,” the Norwegian company explains.

“Three options, all in a single web browser, all on your iOS device. Opera Mini has long been a must for people on the go, roaming to distant places of the world, and, with Opera Mini 8, it takes its place as the all-inclusive alternative web browser.”

Opera Mini 8 is a looker! You get a completely overhauled UI that’s in line with iOS 7, themes to customize its appearance, transparency (something Apple now uses in both iOS and OS X), and more.

From the Speed Dial page you can now select one of your favorite entries, or immediately get fresh content from the Discover feature by swiping to the left. There you get a long list of content choices, so you can be sure you’ll never be bored.

“The Discover feature will [...] provide fresh content from a rich variety of high-quality news websites, blogs and more for a super-easy overview of what’s new on the web. Once you’ve selected an article and tapped it to read more, swipe left and right to read more articles tailored to your preferences,” says Opera Software.

A new tab gallery will be most noticeable on iPhone, while the browser takes even more advantage of the iPad’s big screen. The address bar is also a search bar now, you get the ability to share URLs via QR code, and you can edit addresses and search terms much easier now.
