Oslo, Norway-based Opera Software has announced the release of Opera Mini 7.0.2, an updated version of its popular web browser on mobile platforms, which now features Retina-display visuals on supported tablet computers.

Ceremoniously introduced this March, Apple’s third-generation iPad boasts a high-resolution display labeled as Retina, which means the user can’t distinguish individual pixels at normal viewing distance.

Ever since its release, almost every major software vendor distributing iPad apps has updated its offerings to support the new standard. This week, it was Opera’s turn:

“Opera Mini 7.0.2 for iOS was released today on the Apple App Store,” writes Phillip, on the Opera Mobile blog. “While all iOS users are recommended to update, iPad 3 ‘new iPad’ owners get an extra update in the latest release. Opera Mini now supports the new iPad Retina display,” he notes.

In addition to the graphical enhancement, which only iPad 3 owners will enjoy, version 7.0.2 brings a new option in the main menu called Data Usage. Opera is renowned for optimizing page loads, both on the desktop and on the mobile front. This not only saves time and hardware resources, but also money for mobile customers.

“Keep Opera Mini handy on your iOS device, especially for those unavoidable times you are on a slow crowded network, away from Wi-Fi or when data roaming,” says the Norwegian company.

“Opera's powerful servers compress data by up to 90% before downloading, so page loads are lightning fast,” according to the marketing materials.

Another change is “fixed redirects for iTunes links.” It’s not a mystery that iTunes links pose problems for all web browsers, especially when they redirect to the actual iTunes application. Hopefully, this update will eliminate any potential crashes and freezes experienced by iOS customers.

Last but not least, the new Opera Mini for iPhones and iPads includes various stability fixes. It remains to be seen whether or not these fixes actually worked. It wouldn’t be the first time Opera’s browser continued to act up following a bug fix release.
