The browser is based on Chromium, but it's rather different

Vivaldi is a web browser based on Chromium, developed by an Opera founder and his team. They want to provide a browser that is aimed at power users and that makes no compromises regarding its functionality.

Before you start rolling your eyes at the thought of yet another browser using Chromium, you will have to give this one a chance. It's rather different from what Google and Opera are doing, even if they share the same base. In this case, different is a good thing and you can never have too much competition.

The browser market is a busy one, especially on the Linux platform. The Windows and Mac OS X users have to contend with just a few browser choices, but the Linux users have much more choices than you can imagine. There are all kinds of Firefox variants out there and even some that are based on Webkit or other engines. The truth is that Linux had enough poorly built browsers, but it would definitely help to have a really good one.

Vivaldi is deceptively simple and complex at the same time

The Vivaldi developers are looking to build more than just a simple Internet browser. They are also integrating an email client (which is not ready), and bring some very interesting features that feel right at home.

"What you get now is our first Technical preview. It is a build intended to show the direction of our product. It is not perfect, far from it. Some of the key features we integrate are yet to be implemented, optimization needs to be done. But we hope that you get a glimpse of our product and what you can expect from us," is noted on the official website.

Some of the new features include the ability to stack tabs, to make sidenotes for websites, and to access all kinds of interesting filters like Sepia or Content Blocker. If we also keep in mind that this is a technical preview, then the results are all the more impressive. It can only get better from this point forward.

As usual, you can download Vivaldi for Linux from Softpedia. Only RPM and DEB files are provided. Also, the Windows and Mac OS X versions are also available.
