Opera confirms it’s working on a version for Windows 10

Opera Mini has recently launched on Windows Phone in stable form, and now the company behind the popular browser is ready to start work on a new project that would really come in handy to those who plan to upgrade to Windows 10.

Opera has confirmed in a short tweet that it’s building a universal app for Windows 10 that would work not only on smartphones but also on PCs and tablets, adding that this version is projected to launch later this year.

What exactly “later this year” means is hard to predict, but given the fact that it’s supposed to run on both phones and PCs, and Windows 10 Mobile is expected in the fall of 2015, the new browser should see daylight soon after the release of the new mobile OS.

A rival to Microsoft Edge

Despite the small market share, Opera is one of the best alternatives to more popular browsers such as Chrome and Firefox, but if a universal version arrives on Windows 10, it could become pretty much the number one rival to Microsoft Edge, Redmond’s new browser for the upcoming operating system.

Edge is developed as a universal app too, so it’ll work on PCs, smartphones, and tablets running Windows 10, with the same features and look.

Opera for Windows 10 is very likely to be based on the very same concept, so it could easily compete with Edge and fight with it on Microsoft’s own playground.

Needless to say, competition is good and users always like to have an alternative to anything, and since Opera is getting better and better on the desktop, the Windows 10 app is expected to impress from the very beginning.

Until this universal version arrives, you can always download Opera for Windows desktop and see what it has to offer on a PC. Opera for Windows Phone is available here.
