The Opera developers have released a new version of their Internet browser in the 25.x branch, which is still under heavy development.

Opera is based on Chromium and that means that updates for the browser arrive at a pretty brisk pace. Numerous changes and various improvements have been made to the browser, but it's still under development and it looks like it's going to stay this way for a while.

The Linux development for the new Opera based on Chromium took some time to get off the ground, but now it seems like every new release also has something for the Linux users and that's always good news.

"We released a new update to Opera developer 25. This update comes with a few fixes for things like bookmarks, MP3, H.264 and more.

"We decided to change the name of the Opera Developer stream to Opera developer. The change is small, but make more sense together with another change we will make in the near future," reads the official announcement.

According to the changelog, the implementation of MP3 and H.264 support has been improved, the Chromium base has been updated on master to 38.0.2114.2, the address field no longer leaks the Enter key event to the page, first right click on a speed dial in a new window is no longer inert, the SD edit box has been raised, the title in CJK at Tab Preview is no longer shown as a box, bookmarks with & in them now show up properly in the menu, and the add bookmark to speed dial function has been added.

Also, the animation/transition for switching between SD/Discover is now done according to the design, the PDF plugin no longer produces blurry texts, the “recently closed” submenu now shows up in the Unity menu, and the image dimension is now taken from the load time data.

There are a number of known problems related to the new Web Notifications feature that was added just last week. The developers have explained that there is no way to toggle notifications on or off in the Settings page, there is no way to deny a site's request to serve notifications, and the Settings page is crashing on OS X 10.7 and 10.8. This last issue doesn't really concern Linux users, but it should be mentioned nonetheless.

You can download Opera 25.0.1592.0 for Linux right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
