The Opera developers have released a new version of their Internet browser and they brought the version up to 25.x, at the same time implementing a number of new features.

Now that the Opera developers are working on the Linux version, users expect only the best from them, but most of all, to have the same quality as the other supported platforms, Windows and Mac OS X.

This might be the chief reason why Linux doesn't have yet a stable release and why the devs chose to jump from 24.x to 25.x while maintaining the development status. It might seem odd, but the truth is that Linux users have waited a year for this release and they are willing to wait a little bit more for a proper version.

“From now on, Opera officially supports web notifications. These are a special kind of pop-up triggered by a site. Notifications alert the user outside of the context of the browser. Usually, the operating system UI is used to display the alert.”

“This is very convenient way for web page and web app makers to inform their users about events, such as the delivery of email or a comment posted on a blog. You can check it out if you use the Gmail web client. Enable Desktop Notifications in your Gmail settings and have fun!” reads the announcement.

This is not exactly news, because Google Chrome has been using notifications for quite some time, but they don't seem to work with anything other than Gmail. If the Opera developers make it work with other websites, it's going to be a very nice feature to have.

According to the changelog, components have been turned into static libraries, the DirectFB compositor code has been integrated into master, MP3 and H.264 support has been added, it's now possible to use FFMpeg from the system, stash has been added on the HTTP Authorization dialog, the installation bubble now closes after clicking on it, MOV files support has been implemented, and the “Lookup selection” has been added to text-selection context-menu.

Also, the Opera window is now resizeable by dragging the upper border, an alternative High DPI solution has been implemented, the button tooltips no longer cut off at window edge in the restored window, and Opera no longer crashes when opening multiple tabs from bookmarks.

You can download Opera 25.0.1583.1 for Linux right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
