Get ready for Opera 11, the next major iteration of Opera Software’s browser. Following the release of Opera 10.60, the Norway-based browser maker has been hard at work on the next generation of its browser. And while it appeared for a while that Opera 10.60 will be succeeded by Opera 10.70, this will not be the case.

Opera Software confirmed officially that the next major iteration of Opera has been branded as Opera 11.

This could of course be a hint as to the fact that Opera 11 is planned for availability in 2011, but the browser vendor offered no details related to the availability deadline for Opera 10.60’s successor.

The announcement was made during a press event at Up North Web, with the confirmation that users will not get an Opera 10.70 Final release.

Early adopters that have been following the evolution of Opera are undoubtedly already aware that Opera Software has been offering a range of Opera 10.70 development snapshots for testing.

There’s not telling at this point in time whether the Norwegian browser vendor will continue to push pre-release variants of Opera 10.70 to testers, or whether it will start delivering Opera 11 development snapshots instead.

“The upcoming Opera 11 alpha will be based on the current Opera 10.70 builds, which also means we will not ship a 10.70 final,” revealed a member of the Opera Desktop team.

It’s bound that Opera 11 will bring to the table a variety of enhancements, new capabilities and features. In this regard, Opera Software already confirmed that Opera 11 will be highly customizable, per the Firefox model.

“For desktop we have showcased extensions which will be part of the Opera 11 release,” the Opera Desktop team member said.

“Opera has always been very customizable and now we make than even better by allowing developers to extend Opera's rich feature set even further.”
