OpenMW, an open source implementation of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind game engine and functionality, has been updated yet again and is now at version 0.33.0.

The OpenMorrowind project was started a while ago and it has a very simple goal – to transform one of the best RPG games ever made, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind, into a completly new open source world that is better than the original in every way. The developers have been working for a long time on this remake and they are starting to show some impressive results.

The game has been available for quite some time, but it's been more of a curiosity than anything else. More features have been added in the past year and the game is now at the point where regular users can enjoy it, albeit in a limited fashion. The version number is a good indication of the progress made by the devs with OpenMorrowind and we can only hope that they will have the patience and resources to finish this project.

What's new in the latest OpenMW release

The developers have been slowly moving from adding new features towards fixing bugs, and this latest release is proof of that. It's even difficult to list all of the changes and improvements that have been made, and this is a good indication that they are on the right path.

"The OpenMW team is proud to announce the release of version 0.33.0! We are moving closer and closer to our vaunted '1.0' release, and as such, the list of unimplemented features has run excitingly low. This release brings almost 100 fixes, as well as many exciting advancements for OpenCS. Stay tuned!"

"OpenMW is a new and modern engine based on the one that runs the 2002 open-world RPG Morrowind. The engine (OpenMW) will come with its own editor (OpenCS) which will allow the user to edit or create their own games. Both OpenCS and OpenMW are written from scratch and aren't made to support any third party programs the original Morrowind engine uses to improve its functionality," say the developers on the website.

A complete list of changes and new features can be found in the official announcement. In order to use OpenMW, players must legally own and install the original game, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. You can download OpenMW 0.33.0 right now from Softpedia. This is still under development, so it's likely that bugs are still present. If you play the game and you find any, be sure to let the team know.
