OpenMediaVault 1.0, an open source project based on Debian Linux that aims to provide a simple free NAS solution, has been released and is now ready for download.

As you can expect, there are a ton of free NAS (network attached storage) projects and solutions on Linux (and beyond), but there is always room for one more. OpenMediaVault packs quite a few features and users will most likely find all the options that they will ever need.

The OpenMediaVault might have a round and neat version number, but the project has been around for a few years now and it's made by Volker Theile, a former member of FreeNAS, which is another very famous NAS solution.

What's so special about OpenMediaVault

First of all, OpenMediaVault is based on Debian Linux 7.x Wheezy, which is the stable branch of the distribution. The developers have made numerous changes and improvements, and the entire system has been expanded through the use of plug-ins.

The system is controlled via a web UI and comes with features such as HDD power management (APM/AAM), GPT partitions, EXT3 / EXT4 / XFS / JFS filesystem support, software RAID JBOD/0/1/5/6, Syslog, S.M.A.R.T., support for various services and protocols (SSH, FTP, TFTP, NFS (v3/v4), SMB/CIFS, RSync), plugin support, and many other features.

"OpenMediaVault is the next generation network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux. It contains services like SSH, (S)FTP, SMB/CIFS, DAAP media server, RSync, BitTorrent client and many more. Thanks to the modular design of the framework it can be enhanced via plugins. OpenMediaVault is primarily designed to be used in home environments or small home offices, but is not limited to those scenarios. It is a simple and easy to use out-of-the-box solution that will allow everyone to install and administrate a Network Attached Storage without deeper knowledge," say the devs on the official website.
