OpenMW is an open source implementation of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind game engine and functionality, and the developers have just upgraded it to version 0.36.0, bring the project a little bit closer to a stable release.

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind is still considered today one of the best open-world RPG games ever made, so it's not really a surprise that people are trying to build other stuff from it. In this case, OpenMW is a project that aims not only to bring The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind to other platforms, but to also greatly improve upon the gameplay and all of the aspects of the original game. It's been a long journey, and it's likely that it will take a while until the 1.0 release, but things are moving in the right direction.

It's been a while since the 0.35.0 update, February in fact, and now we finally get to see what changes and improvements have been done since then. All of the updates for this project are extremely consistent, and the current version is not different, although the number of features has dropped significantly, and the number of fixes has increased.

OpenMW is already showing a lot of promise

The developers of OpenMW have made a lot of headway, and they are almost done with features, as you can see from the changelog. It's mostly now about fixes, but you have to keep in mind that it's a huge game, and it's difficult to cover everything.

"The OpenMW team is proud to announce the release of version 0.36.0! This release is relatively small as we eagerly await scrawl’s rendering port to OSG. There are a multitude of important fixes for OpenMW-CS, which is progressing at a healthy pace," wrote the devs.

According to the changelog, a hotkey for hand-to-hand combat has been added, a key bind for always sneaking has been implemented, the Erene Lleni NPC is no longer wondering about, Detect Spell no longer returns false positives, and numerous OpenMW-CS fixes have been added.

To use OpenMW, players must legally own and install the original game, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. You can download OpenMW 0.36.0 right now from Softpedia.
