This is just a maintenance release for the 5.x branch

OpenELEC, an embedded operating system built specifically to support the Kodi media player hub and to run on most available hardware, is now at version 5.0.2 and is ready for download.

OpenELEC is an operating system that uses Kodi (former XBMC) as the base. The developers follow the KODI development cycle very closely, but they are also pushing updates on their own. The 5.x branch of OpenELEC is stable for quite some time and is based on the latest version of Kodi, but a couple of updates have been released for it in the meantime.

The developers of the OS need to worry about more than just the Kodi base. They also have to upgrade the core packages, the Linux kernel, and some of the apps that are implemented by default. That's the reason why we still get new OpenELEC versions long after Kodi reached stable status.

OpenELEC 5.0.2 is out

OpenELEC is a bleeding edge distribution that aims to implement all the latest packages available at one time. That means the newest Linux kernel, newest drivers, and all kind of packages.

"The OpenELEC team is proud to announce OpenELEC 5.0.2. OpenELEC-5.0 is the next stable release, which is a feature release and the successor of OpenELEC-4.2. The headline change is the update from XBMC 13 (Gotham) to Kodi 14.1 (Helix) and the big switch from XBMC to Kodi branding. Due to the potential for typo-bugs and breakage from Kodi renaming YOU ARE STRONGLY ADVISED TO MAKE A FULL BACKUP before performing a manual update," wrote the developers.

The distribution has a new Mesa patch from upstream, support has been added for PROJECT-based multiple noobs builds, and new drivers have been implemented.

More details about the changes and improvements can be found in the official announcement. You can download the latest OpenELEC 5.0.2 right now from Softpedia.
