In an effort to make the Internet more secure, GlobalSign has announced that it’s now offering free SSL certificates for any qualified open source project.

Qualified projects – ones that use a license approved by the Open Source Initiative – are eligible to receive one free Wildcard SSL Certificate that’s valid for as long as the project meets the necessary requirements.

“We are delighted to show our commitment to the open-source community by offering free SSL Certificates to these projects,” noted Ryan Hurst, chief technology officer, GMO GlobalSign, Inc.

“We believe this effort will not only help the developers and users of open-source projects but also encourage the adoption of industry best-practices in the use of SSL.”

This offering is only a small part of GlobalSign’s initiative to make the Web safer. Back in November 2012, the company released a free SSL configuration checker.

The free tool has been used by a large number of organizations to address their SSL issues.
