Titanium Software has launched a Lion-only version of OnyX, the powerful maintenance tool aimed at Mac users.

Once installed, OnyX will ask the user for permission to Verify the Startup Disk, before running Maintenance or Cleaning tasks. Titanium recommends that users allow this process to unfold.

As some processes can affect the results, OnyX will quit all applications. Users are encouraged to save their work.

During the verification, Titanium cautions that users may see the spinning beach ball, a slowdown of the Finder and, at times, a non-responsive computer.

This is normal behavior, according to the developer.

“If your computer freezes during the verification of the volume, you need not worry. This is an expected and normal behavior! Once OnyX has finished checking, control will be returned to you,” says Titanium Software.

Users are advised to back up their data before using OnyX.

“OnyX is not bug-free, and no user is infallible. Back up your data using Time Machine or any third-party backup utility.”

While OnyX doesn't remove your personal data, you will need to keep an eye out for certain basic rules regarding the file system.

Users are advised not to store their documents or applications in folders that are subordinated to the operating system (e.g., folders named "Library," "System," or in any of the sub-folders of these folders).

Also worth noting is that OnyX will not always be able to correct a function that has an undesirable behavior.

If a function causes a problem, users can disable it. However, “if a function is hidden, there must be a good reason,” according to Titanium.

OnyX and the Mac OS should always be up to date simultaneously, if you want the best behavior.

“The last versions generally correct at least some of the problems encountered in previous versions.”

Those who are using OnyX but wish to uninstall it can do so by going to the OnyX menu and selecting "Uninstall OnyX."

When the confirmation dialog appears, click the Continue button.

The components created while installing and using OnyX will be removed, along with the application itself.
