Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn first did “Drive” together, a neo-noir, post-modern take on the nameless antihero theme that was a huge hit with critics, so you can imagine the kind of interest their latest project, “Only God Forgives,” generated.

Below is a first, totally red band trailer for the film.

By the looks of it, whatever hype is around the project is more than justified: in trademark blues and reds, and using music to anticipate events rather than to just accompany them, Refn builds an entire world for his characters to inhabit, one that they will probably end up destroying.

Refn also uses colors and music to define psychological space rather than the physical one. Those who’ve seen his “Bronson” with Tom Hardy know what I’m talking about.

In “Only God Forgives,” Gosling plays a boxer and drug dealer who is forced by his mother to avenge his brother’s death. Kristin Scott Thomas is the mother and she’s as exquisite as ever.

The film will be out in July. *Please note that discretion is recommended before viewing the trailer.
