According to the 2013 Global Corporate IT Security Risks survey conducted by B2B International and Kaspersky Lab, most organizations underestimate the volume of malicious software, and only 6% of them recognize the true scale of the threat.

The report shows that close to 200,000 malware samples emerge each day on a global scale. When asked to estimate the number, 90% of organizations believed the figure was lower, while 4% guessed too high.

So which part of the world is most aware when it comes to the volume of malware?

It turns out that respondents from the Middle East gave the most accurate estimates. On the other side of the poll we find Russia.

In North and South America, Asia-Pacific, and Western Europe, 5-7% of companies estimated the volume of malware correctly.

On the other hand, 66% of the companies that took part in the survey experienced at least one malware attack over the previous 12 months.

“Although this figure alone cannot provide an objective measure of the extent to which businesses are prepared to protect themselves from IT security incidents, accurately assessing the level of threat can seriously affect decisions made by companies in choosing the tools for securing their IT infrastructure,” the report reads.

The study has found that around 71% of organizations have fully deployed anti-malware solutions. Around half of the respondents reported using tools to manage regular software updates, managing access rights, and isolating critical parts of their network.

On the bright side, some companies have already started implementing additional security measures which haven’t been used much in previous years.

For instance, 45% of companies reported using application control. Device control is utilized by 41%, antivirus solutions for mobile devices by 40%, and file encryption by 40%.
