SSDs can really increase a laptop’s price and manufacturers shy away from the technology

SSD technology is superior to hard disk drive tech when performance is the measure, but price-wise, SSDs have a long way ahead before they’ll manage to outplace HDDs as the primary computer storage solution.

Studies have shown that notebooks selling for $450 to $550 usually come equipped with 500 GB or larger HDDs.

Cheaper mobile computers priced between $350 and $450 usually feature 320 GB HDDs, and both these categories combined account for almost 60% of the notebook market.

When looking at laptops using 128 GB SSDs, IHS iSuppli’s study reportedly showed that only 3% of the notebooks feature such drives inside.

The company thinks that SSDs will stand a better chance against HDDs once the prices of SSD-equipped notebooks fall under the $700 mark.
