Edge informs us once again

The console war has seen many battles being waged among the top three manufacturers, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony. The arguments have ranged from the features of their devices to online interactivity or game lineup, each of them bragging about the fact that it is the best.

We reported a few weeks ago on a study made by Edge magazine and Eedar, a research company, which showcased the fact that only 13 percent of 48 games made for the Xbox 360 are actually very good, achieving a Metacritic score of over 85. Now, the PlayStation 3 lineup has faced these grueling tests and the results are in.

First of all, let's not forget that the PS3 has a smaller lineup of titles, and has been launched a full year after its North American rival. According to Edge, only 17 percent of titles have gained critical praise, translating into 36 games out of the all PS3-published titles achieving an 85 or better score.

On the other end of the quality bar, 30 percent of PS3 titles, or 65 games, have “achieved” a Metacritic rating of 65 or lower, meaning that your money is better spent elsewhere than on these titles. This also shows that 53 percent of games made for the Japanese console have gained average ratings, between 84 and 66, so the chance of picking out at random a decent PS3 title is pretty big.

While these statistics will only spill more fuel on the console war, let's refrain from any bad comments and wait until next week, when Edge posts the results of the Nintendo Wii lineup that, considering the big amount of bad titles, won't fair as well as these other two consoles.
