OnePlus is looking to diversify its smartphone portfolio

Chinese startup OnePlus is expected to host a press event today, and if we’re to believe what the rumor mill is saying, we should be seeing the next-gen OnePlus Two make a debut in a few hours.

Even if not so long ago we told you the OnePlus 2 had reportedly been delayed to Q4 2015, the information got quickly refuted by news of the upcoming event.

On top of that, it appears that OnePlus will unveil not one handset but two. According to word on the street, the company will be rolling out the OnePlus One Lite as well, which, as the name suggests, is a more affordable version of the company’s flagship (as seen at Android Guys).

OnePlus One Lite could have better specs than the original OnePlus One

However, in comparison to the original OnePlus One, the Lite model will come with several upgrades and improvements.

Take into consideration that these are solely rumors and there’s a big possibility OnePlus won’t unveil any of these two models today. After all, the company surprised us on April 1 by rolling out a mini drone that allowed for a flight time of about 5-8 minutes.

Anyway, if we do see the OnePlus Two make a debut today, the phone should be arriving with a 5.5-inch QHD display (an upgrade from the FHD standard offered on board the OnePlus One), a Snapdragon 810 processor, and 3GB of RAM.

Sources familiar with the matter have also said the phone will make it out with a laser focus fingerprint identification system embedded in the home button. On top of that, the handset should be all metal-clad, so it will probably be more expensive than the current offering.

Is the OnePlus Two coming today?

Previous rumors claimed that OnePlus would postpone the launch of its Two handset, for fear of not being outshined by the competition. After all, Sony announced the Xperia Z4 today in a surprise move and LG is due to roll out the G4 flagship in a few days.

Moreover, OnePlus might have been uncomfortable with Qualcomm’s controversial Snapdragon 810 platform and might want to wait until the next iteration comes along. Which means there is a possibility to see the OnePlus Two arrive with a Snapdragon 820 running through its entrails.

But this won’t be the case if the Chinese startup launches the flagship today, following in Sony’s footsteps.
