OnePlus is taking extra time to develop its flagship model

OnePlus is a Chinese start-up that built its reputation on its single CyanogenOS-based handset, the One. However, in recent times, OnePlus has severed the bonds with the world’s most popular custom ROM maker, which forced it to assemble a team and create its own custom ROM, dubbed OxygenOS.

The new OS should power the phone maker’s upcoming OnePlus 2 handset, which is reportedly under development.

The phone was said to be arriving in Q3 complete with a Snapdragon 810 chipset on the inside, but recent information seems to indicate that fans of OnePlus will probably have to wait a little bit longer.

OnePlus 2 coming later than expected

According to sources familiar with the matter cited by Gizmo China, OnePlus 2’s launch has been pushed towards the end of the year, so now we’re being told to expect the next-gen flagship around November or December.

At some point in the past, word on the street claimed the OnePlus 2 was set to arrive in the third quarter of the year so that Qualcomm could have enough time to solve the overheating issues related to the problematic Snapdragon 810.

But what if OnePlus is looking to avoid the Snapdragon 810 altogether? Postponing the phone’s launch to the fourth quarter might give Qualcomm the chance to roll out the Snapdragon 820 silicone and OnePlus the opportunity to pick it up and use it for its next flagship.

That would certainly put to rest a lot of concerns related to overheating. If the Snapdragon 820 manages to arrive without that bothersome problem, that is.

On the other hand, we’re currently seeing an avalanche of flagship launches. HTC and Samsung have just introduced their latest top-tier products, and Sony, LG and Huawei are also expected to take the same step. So maybe OnePlus wants to make sure its launch is not overshadowed by the competition.

More than that, most flagships arriving today take advantage of a Snapdragon 810 processor, but if OnePlus manages to be one of the first phone makers with a Snapdragon 820-powered device out on the market, it would certainly attract a lot of attention on itself.
