A future core antimalware solution will replace Windows Live OneCare, which, considering the price of a one year subscription, has already qualified for an alternative to free security software, come mid-2009. Sales of OneCare licenses will be discontinued at the end of June 2009, in order to be replaced by codename Morro, a free security solution tailored to Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. Microsoft indicated that its decision had nothing to do with OneCare's quality, performance, and overall level of protection.

“Microsoft is refocusing our efforts away from the for-fee OneCare security suite business, and on to a quality no-cost anti-malware solution for a simple reason: We are committed to helping more consumers in more markets have a reliable, trusted experience on Windows PCs,” revealed a member of the Windows Live OneCare team.

The Redmond company emphasized that it would continue to deliver support for OneCare, as long as subscription agreements would last. Additionally, existing OneCare users that would wish to adopt Morro, would receive guidance from Microsoft for the transition.

“OneCare is tested by numerous organizations around the world and has been certified by two of the industry's leading independent certification authorities, ICSA Labs and West Coast Labs, as providing high-quality and effective protection against viruses, spyware, and other forms of malware. In addition, Windows Live OneCare has received VB100 awards since June 2007,” the OneCare team member added.

Microsoft is attempting to squash comments and criticism that welcomed the demise of OneCare, due to the way the product performed on end-users’ machines, the level of security it managed to offer, and how it compared with other security products available on the market. The software giant indicated that, with the free antimalware Morro solution, it was aiming to make it easy for over 60% of Windows users, who did not run security software to stay secure.

I will be very sorry to see Window's Live OneCare go. I have run Live OneCare on 3 machines (2 Vista, one XP SP3) for several years without any problems at all. Despite being an all day surfer who loves to snoop in hacker's sites and other bad places, I've never had a virus get past OneCare. I replaced Norton's Internet Security with OneCare because of its speed and unobtrusiveness. OneCare always worked smoothly with my system and software. It's a pity Microsoft is dropping it. I can only hope that Morro will be better.

I have been using LiveOneCare for several years and found it to be a great product, once you got it installed. I've never had a problem and it took care of background stuff while I ran apps. I will mis it. Hope the replacment is as good.

I am disappointed that OneCare is finishing. I have found it excellent in all the years I have used it. I was in the first Beta OneCare and I am sorry to see that it is the end. The automatic backup was first rate, and was not obvious.

When i got my laptop, it had vista on it and Norton. i replaced Norton with OneCare and never had a problem since! It even detected a trojan on my USB stick one day when i first conected it to my laptop after using it on another PC. I'm going to miss it! I just hope that morro is just as good or even better!

This totally sucks. One Care was so nice. I recommended it to everyone at work. I am going to look like a complete idiot

It's worse, if you pre-ordered Windows 7 and then run the compatibility checker, Onecare is not supported or compatibloe with that platform. Instead you have to wait for the new Microsoft Security Essentials alternative, which as of writing has no release date yet. So basically your options for Windows 7 are:

Install it and then install the Beta version fo MSE (if you are happy to do so).
Dont install and wait for the propper release of MSE.
Or go an spend money on an alternative security suite, in the process write of the value of your Onecare remaining subscription.

Basically this is a very poor way to treat customers paying for a service!!!
