Basically, you need Sasquatch hands for some things

If you’re considering an upgrade to the iPhone 6 Plus and hope to use it like your former iPhone 5s, prepare for a wake-up call.

The first thing that strikes you when you first grab an iPhone 6 Plus is its size. The thing is humongous! There are devices in its category with bigger screens that actually have smaller enclosures. For one reason or another, Apple decided to stick with the huge bezel and make the device taller than Empire State Building.

Think of your needs before your buy

Jokes aside, iPhone 6 is a really great device. Especially if you're the workaholic type who runs a business form their smartphone, or if you’re a creative using drawing apps, music tools, or even CAD design solutions. But if you’re a regular everyday normal guy or gal with nothing but WhatsApp on your agenda, think before you buy.

The iPhone 6 Plus is a major pain in the neck for one-hand typing. Imagine how often you find yourself using your phone with one hand on the subway. Now remember that the other hand is usually clutching something for stability. You don’t want to discover that after paying nearly a $1,000 / €1,000 for a premium iPhone 6 Plus you can't use it to chat properly with your friends on the go. Just saying.

There already are solutions for this, but we can’t guarantee that they work well for everyone. Plus, the mere fact that apps like One Handed Keyboard exist is pure evidence that iPhone 6 Plus is not designed for one-handed use. At least not the typing bit. It doesn’t make it a bad phone. It just makes it different. A lot different than any other iPhone before it.

On the good side

Of course, Apple didn’t make the Plus big just to compete with Samsung’s army of phablets. Or maybe they did, who knows? The point is if it exists, there’s a reason for it. A darn good one too, because Tim Cook and his troops don’t just commission a new design because they feel like it. They saw there was demand for it, so they got busy.

But who are these people that demanded it? Well, many of them (perhaps most of them) are the people who think they’ll be able to use it just like any other iPhone, but with a much bigger view of what they're doing. These are the naive customers who, after reading the bad press surrounding the iPhone 6 Plus, will reconsider their demands.

Another group of people who want a big iOS device that’s not a tablet and not an iPhone 5 is the business sector. You can do a lot of office things on a 5.5-inch device, even though Apple should seriously consider improving email and other work-related features.

China, with its massive appetite for large displays, along with the Android AWOL that wants a change, is also responsible for the emergence of the Apple phablet. You can bet these people know what can and can’t be done with one hand on a large smartphone.
