Some women make of makeup an art. Others can’t even imagine their life without it, while one in three admits to not stepping outside the house without applying makeup first, a new study reveals.

Many women see makeup as a mask, which they credit for lots of things, including a promotion, a successful relationship, and, of course, a good body-image and self-esteem.

The study, conducted on over 3,000 women by Superdrug, and cited by the Daily Mail, reveals just how important cosmetics are for women, with the vast majority of them not being able even to imagine what life would be without them.

One third of the ladies queried admit to wearing makeup even when they step out for a few minutes to shop for groceries. One in ten women keeps the mask on at home as well, and would never let their partner see them au naturelle.

Some even admit that they wake up hours before their partner to make sure they get themselves all made up before they wake up too – though their number is small.

As far as work is concerned, six out of ten women say they would never go to the office without makeup, lest their bosses thought they didn’t take proper care of themselves.

Moreover, an estimated 37 percent of women believe they would literally be ignored for a promotion and have their career dreams killed if they ever presented themselves to work without a full face on.

“For many women, putting their make-up on is an important part of their day, and the thought of people seeing them without can be horrifying. We know that when it comes to cutting back, cosmetics are seen as an essential,” Sara Wolverson of Superdrug says for the Mail.

“Wearing and buying cosmetics is not about vanity. It’s about giving a woman confidence to succeed in every area of their life,” Wolverston adds.

Still, life coach Jackie Fletcher underlines that a full face of makeup can have the exact opposite effect on an employer than the anticipated one.

Moreover, certain self-esteem issues can’t be covered with foundation and need proper addressing by a specialist, Fletcher explains for the same publication.
