Presently, IKEA is the proud owner of about 157 wind turbines and roughly 550,000 solar panels that are installed on top of several of its buildings worldwide.

What's more, it appears that the amount of energy produced by these wind turbines and solar panels in 2013 alone matched about 37% of the Swedish furniture retailer's global consumption.

Therefore, it's safe to say that the company is well on track to becoming carbon neutral as early as 2020. More so given the fact that, in the years to come, the company plans to install solar panels on 90% of its stores in the US.

According to Think Progress, the latest addition to IKEA's green energy facilities is a 46-megawatt wind farm in Alberta, Canada.

The plant is made up of 20 turbines, and is expected to produce twice as much environmentally friendly electricity as IKEA Canada needs to keep online throughout the course of an entire year.

Now that it has purchased this wind farm in Alberta, IKEA is said to have become the largest retail wind energy investor in Canada, the same source details.

Commenting on the company's plans to invest heavily in harvesting renewables, Kerri Molinaro, president of IKEA Canada, said that thanks to such projects, “We are able to support the transition to a low carbon future, reduce our energy and operating costs, and pass those benefits on to our customers by continuing to offer high quality home furnishings at low prices.”
