A new report from the NPD Group shows that gamers are becoming more comfortable than ever with buying the digital versions of their favorite games rather than the physical ones.

The 2012 Online Gaming report from the firm which also offers monthly tracking data for the United States market shows that 30 percent of the gamers who were questioned prefer to get their video games via digital distribution services.

The number is an increase of about 10% over 2011 and another 40 percent of those who have purchased games also bought one of their titles both in physical and digital format.

More than 8,500 gamers were involved in the creation of the NPD Group report.

Rumors suggest that the next generation of home consoles from Microsoft and Sony will include digital distribution services in order to allow players to get content quicker and without having to visit a brick and mortar store.
