Apple has announced that more than one million users have joined Ping, the new social network for music built inside iTunes 10. The milestone was achieved in less than 48 hours since its launch on Wednesday, Apple said.

Apple announced the feat in one of its typical news releases through the PR section of its web site.

Ping allows iTunes 10 users to follow others and “discover what music they’re talking about, listening to and downloading,” Apple describes the service.

“Ping lets you follow your favorite artists such as Lady Gaga, Coldplay, U2, Jack Johnson, Yo-Yo Ma and more, to see what they’re up to, check out photos and videos they’ve posted, see their tour dates and read comments about other artists and albums they’re listening to,” the company elaborates.

Users can also post comments much like with FaceBook.

“One-third of the people who have downloaded iTunes 10 have joined Ping,“ said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services.

“As many more people download iTunes 10 in the coming weeks, we expect the Ping community to continue growing,” Cue added,

During the September 1 event held in San Francisco, at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple CEO Steve Jobs explained that users can employ Ping to follow their favorite artists and become part of their inner circle, or find out what music an artist likes and pick up some recommendations.

Users can see who their friends are following and who’s following them.

Ping users can share artist photos and status updates, see what kind of music their friends and friends-to-be are into, and decide whether or not to follow them, just like with Twitter.

Furthermore, Ping allows users to find out what music other fans are listening to lately. One click commands are available to preview songs or view an entire album by that group.
