Nuance Communications has announced an update to the OnStar RemoteLink iPhone app which now features Dragon-powered voice recognition capabilities.

OnStar integrated the Nuance’s voice recognition technology as part of the Nuance Mobile Developer Program to address the needs of Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC owners with eligible 2010 or 2011 model year vehicles.

The app enables drivers to perform remote commands, such as unlocking doors from anywhere.

A new navigation feature allows drivers to simply speak a destination, or even search for destination details, all by voice.

Users can send the search details from their iPhone directly to their OnStar service for turn-by-turn navigation.

Available as a free download from the iTunes App Store, the OnStar RemoteLink app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iOS 4.0.1 or later.

Commenting on the new release, Steve Schwinke, director of Advanced System Design, OnStar, explained that their goal was to add an enhanced navigation service so that RemoteLink users are able to get directions and destination information anywhere.

“And by integrating voice recognition and search capabilities, users can quickly and easily speak an address or destination, get results, send them to OnStar – and be on their way,” said Schwinke.

“Mobile consumers have come to expect a certain level of instant gratification with mobile apps – it should be easy to access and use, and deliver results in seconds,” said Arnd Weil, vice president and general manager, Nuance Automotive.

“Voice has quickly proven to be one of the most natural and convenient mobile interfaces, and with our portfolio of Dragon-powered SDKs, developers and telematic services providers like OnStar can easily give their consumers an innovative app experience that maps back to their mobile lifestyle,” Weil added.
