The owners of Xperia PLAY smartphones now have at their disposal a new application that can take full advantage of the gaming capabilities that Sony Ericsson packed the device with, namely an OnLive application.

The software, already available for Android devices, has been recently updated to offer support for the game controls that Xperia PLAY came to the market from day one.

Following this update, users can benefit from support of almost all OnLive games, including the latest AAA console-class titles, the company announced.

The Xperia PLAY smartphone comes with a touchscreen display and with a slide-out gamepad with dedicated gaming keys, analog touch joysticks and shoulder buttons.

The newly updated OnLive Android App brings along AAA high-performance games that can be controlled using these buttons, for a better experience than before.

“From the moment we launched our OnLive Android app, gamers began asking about Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY game control support,” said Steve Perlman, OnLive founder and CEO.

“We listened and delivered. Now Xperia PLAY gamers in the US and UK can play almost all of OnLive’s 200 premium titles-including hit AAA games like Saints Row: The Third and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations-on their Xperia PLAY smartphone with a full console-class experience, including multiplayer and social features.”

The OnLive app is a cloud gaming software offered for free, aimed at bringing great games on the smaller screen of mobile phones and tablet PCs.

The OnLive games are streamed over the Internet in a similar manner in which music and videos can be streamed, eliminating the need to download and install them on the device.

At the same time, the games are cross-platform, which means that users can benefit from their capabilities on phones, tablets, PCs and Macs, and even on supported TVs.

“Now, with Xperia PLAY, gamers will be able to extend OnLive’s high-performance game touch experience with the greater control, better accuracy and the physical feeling of a game console controller, all in a single compact smartphone,” the company notes.

The OnLive app is available for download via the Android Market.
