Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has started a few days ago to deliver a new software version for the users of a Motorola DROID, one that brings
the Android 2.0.1 platform to the table. The carrier announced that the new firmware update for the device would be sent over the air to all of its users, only that this would take some time to complete. Most probably due to the large number of early adopters of the hot Android-powered mobile phone.
According to a recent
article on BGR, all
Motorola DROID users should prepare themselves to see another software update delivered to them over the air as soon as 2010 arrives here. Or, at least, sometime in late January, as the source notes. This means that, while one is getting accustomed with the new flavor of DROID's firmware, working on discovering what's new with it, another software solution will come to the device, bringing more to the game.
However, while that January update might be the long rumored Android 2.1 flavor of
Google's OS, it remains to be seen if it will actually arrive in time. In the meantime, those who are interested in learning how the OTA update process for Verizon's DROID will be performed, here's what BGR
says: “After the initial 10,000 [OTA deployments], there is a 48-hour waiting period. No one after that receives anything until December 10th at 12AM, which will be 200,000 people. It will continue at 200,000 devices a day until everyone is updated.”
On the other hand, it seems that there are some good news for those who are not willing to sit back and wait for Verizon to deliver
the new software solution to them. There are at least two ways in which one can manually install the OTA update on the Motorola DROID, and you can find all the necessary details on them
here on androidcentral, and
here on Engadget. On a side note, we should also mention that
the DROID got rooted, though it seems that apps from the Android Market that require root cannot be yet used in this manner.
