The Android 4.4 KitKat update for Nexus 7 tablets (both 2012 and 2013) has been unleashed, not so long ago. However, if the updates and novelties found in the new build are not enough for you, you might want to consider the newest custom ROM made available curtsey of OmniROM.

Nexus 7 2012 3G (tilapia), Nexus 7 2012 Wi-Fi (grouper) and Nexus 7 2013 Wi-Fi (flo) can all take advantage of the new offering. OmniROM is a family of new ROMs, which has become increasingly popular among Android fans, as of late.

What OmniROM strives to bring here is a bunch of extra feats you won’t find on stock or AOSP builds. On top of that, the developers are increasingly trying to perfect nightly builds, making them stable enough to be used throughout the day.

So what tweaks can you expect to find with this custom ROM? For starters, you’ll be getting a discrete call pop-up instead of a full-screen notification. The Active Display feat will be intelligent enough to sense whether the tablet is in your pocket. In case it’s not, receiving a notification will cause your screen to briefly light up.

Audio playback gets a boost too, thanks to the added DSP enhancements (a new Bass Boot center frequency feat included in DSP Manager.) Last but not least, per-app permission control is now enabled in Settings menu.

Those who have a custom recovery waiting to be used can immediately head on to the OmniROM Download page in order to get started. On top of the Nexus 7, the new custom ROM supports the Nexus 5, Samsung Galaxy SIII, Samsung Galaxy Note, Oppo Find 5 and others. More devices are going to be added soon.

OmniROM hasn't been around that long, compared to other popular custom ROM builders such as Paranoid Android or CyanogenMod, but the dev team behind the project does include some pretty famous members such as Chainfire, Dees-Troy or Xplodwild.
