The new Olympus camera was recently uncovered in a patent filed in Japan

As most camera producers are based in Japan, most patents are submitted to the Japanese regulatory commissions and Olympus is no exception to that.

A recent uncovered patent by Egami shows that Olympus enthusiasts have some juicy stuff to be looking forward to. The new filing is describing as a pretty impressive i.Zuiko Digital 11mm f/1 lens for compact cameras with 1/1.7-inch type image sensor.

Nevertheless, the market is not really lacking in fixed-lens cameras. For example, the Sony RX1 compact camera with full frame sensor fits nicely into the category.

However, Olympus seems to have picked a smaller sensor and a more advanced optic. The lens described in the patent is aimed at 1/1.7-inch type shooters, so that means we might be dealing with a brand new Olympus XZ compact camera.

Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine that the attention will be drawn away from the 11mm f/1 lens, which provides a 34mm equivalent of 50mm.

Currently, Olympus has a high-end compact camera, in the form of the Olympus Stylus 1, a device that was launched back in late 2013.

And while we’re awaiting for the new Olympus with its impressive lens technology, the Stylus 1 is available for purchase for $650 / €471 online at Amazon.
