Organizers rushed to ensure that backup systems were capable of handling the workload

Although we haven’t witnessed any serious cyber security incidents during the London 2012 Olympics, it appears that at least one somewhat serious threat has been made.

Government representatives refused to provide any details, but unnamed sources told The Guardian that security services warned the organizers of a possible cyberattack just before the opening ceremony.

The alert was investigated and it turned out not to be credible, but backup systems were checked to ensure that they could handle communications and lighting in case something were to happen.

The same sources have confirmed that no actual cyberattacks were recorded during the Games.

On the other hand, Home Secretary Theresa May warned back in January that hacktivists might pose a threat to the Olympics.

This is probably the case. State-funded hackers wouldn’t make their plans public before attacking a target. Most likely, a hacktivist or hacktivist group made threats on social media sites or on IRC channels.
