“Any portrait of me right now isn’t complete without my identity as a mother,” star says

Olivia Wilde and fiancé Jason Sudeikis welcomed son Otis Alexander, their first child together, in April 2014, and the actress is proudly showing him off in a beautiful photospread for the latest edition of Glamour magazine.

The spread also includes a shot of Olivia, best known to fans for her roles on TV hit shows like “The O.C.” and “House” but also in blockbusters like “TRON: Legacy,” sitting at a table in a diner, in a designer dress (Roberto Cavalli) and matching Prada shoes, breastfeeding her son.

Olivia jokes on Twitter that Otis peed on her gorgeous dress right after, but at least they had managed to get the shot by then. All jokes aside, her message is one that’s receiving a lot of praise right now on Twitter, that breastfeeding is a natural, beautiful thing that should be glamorized, not made shameful.

“Breastfeeding is the most natural thing. I don’t know, now it feels like Otis should always be on my breast.” Olivia says. “Being shot with Otis is so perfect because any portrait of me right now isn’t complete without my identity as a mother being a part of that.”

Wilde has always been very outspoken about women’s roles and portrayal in the industry of showbiz, but also in other areas. Next month, for instance, she will co-host the International Women’s Media Foundation’s Courage in Journalism Awards, as part of her ongoing support of female journalists.

Women are more than just labels, the star tells the magazine, and more often than not, more than just one label.

“It felt like we were capturing that multifaceted woman we’ve been discussing — that we know we can be. You can be someone who is at once maternal and professional and [hot] and self-possessed. [But] I mean, I certainly don’t really look like that when I’m [typically] breastfeeding. And there’s usually a diaper involved,” she says.

Her career is an example of that, because she made efforts to become very hard to pin down: she started off as a TV actress, a girl-next-door-type of beauty, moved to blockbuster action flicks, but also did indie dramas and comedies. She posed in her underwear but got an education.

She produced and directed films but continued to star in Hollywood productions, including the rom-coms audiences expect a cute girl like her to appear in. She is now running her own business and is also a new mom. She is a fashion icon and self-titled fashion addict, but is the first to say that appearances can only get you this far: only an education can help you become successful in life.

Another reason for which Olivia’s breastfeeding photo is getting so much positive buzz right now is that it comes right in the middle of World Breastfeeding Week, through which the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, UNICEF, and WHO are promoting the health benefits of breastfeeding.
