Scientists say that older women tend to feel more satisfied following intercourse, and add that their level of satisfaction increases with age. The findings apply to older women who are sexually-active, but the team learned that even those displaying low levels of desire report frequent arousal.

In the January issue of the American Journal of Medicine, investigators from the University of California in San Diego School of Medicine and the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System detail how they conducted the study, on a batch of 806 older women.

Menopause had already set in in about 63 percent of women by the time the study was conducted. The average age of participants was 67, the team reports. Of those who had intercourse, about 67 percent reached climax often or always, according to AlphaGalileo.

“Emotional and physical closeness to the partner may be more important than experiencing orgasm. A more positive approach to female sexual health focusing on sexual satisfaction may be more beneficial to women than a focus limited to female sexual activity or dysfunction,” UCSD expert and first study author Susan Trompeter, MD, explains.
