Those who are aware that Mac OS X is not at all immune to malware may surely have some form of antivirus installed on their machine, whether it’s a free solution like ClamXav, or a paid one, such as Intego’s VirusBarrier.

The latter has just been updated to version 10.6.8, Intego recently announced.

As strange as it may sound, the software was updated to offer “iTunes 9.2.1 compatibility” as well as to addresses a number of other minor issues, Intego said.

Leaving aside that iTunes 9 is quite old (iTunes 10 with Ping is the new thing), Intego fails to specify exactly why compatibility with iTunes 9.2.1 was needed in VirusBarrier X6.

“Only VirusBarrier X6 provides comprehensive protection from malware and network threats,” the security firm brags on its web site.

“VirusBarrier X6 is the only antivirus program for Mac that includes full anti-malware protection together with firewall, network protection, anti-phishing, anti-spyware features and more,” it adds.

Intego upholds that focusing on malware or network attacks alone is no longer sufficient to protect Macs from the dangers of the Internet.

Therefore, it struggles to provide comprehensive protection with VirusBarrier X6, according to its web site.

“VirusBarrier X6, the latest version of Intego's network and malware security program, includes more than 100 new features,” Intego informs.

“With multiple threat-detection techniques, improved methods of detection, combined detection protocols, proactive behavioral analysis, and a full range of defensive functions, VirusBarrier X6 protects Macs from all known network-based threats, as well as all known malware,” it adds.

Intego VirusBarrier X6 version 10.6.8 requires Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and around 40 MB of free hard disk space.

The software costs USD 49.95 to buy for 12 months of protection.

Update: Intego has contacted Softpedia to clarify that the changelog for the latest update to VirusBarrier X6 was actually incorrect (hence our surprise to see a mentioning of the old iTunes 9 in the release notes for a program that heavily relies its success on accurate timely updates).

"It was just a problem of website refreshing," Intego claims.

The correct changelog for the new VirusBarrier X6 10.6.8 is now posted to Intego's web site, here.

It now states that "This update improves overall stability, supports general compatibility issues, and addresses a number of other minor issues."

We also corrected the price for a VirusBarrier X6 license (12 months) - USD 49.95.
