Apple hasn't discontinued the old model, but hasn't dropped the price either

Once Apple's store was back online, the new silver iPod shuffle was not that observable at first. However, the more colorful old shuffles were listed as “still available,” catching our eye. We then realized Apple had introduced a new iPod. As we headed over to the main Apple web site, the mystery was unraveled.

As you may have heard, Apple has introduced the third generation of iPod shuffles today, shipping in two colors (silver and black) and boasting 4 gigs of storage capacity. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the new shuffle is concerned. Apple has also equipped the fresh iPod with VoiceOver capabilities. Touted as “the first music player that talks to you,” the device speaks out loud song titles, artist names, and even playlist titles, compensating for the lack of physical controls and a screen.

Admittedly, the third generation shuffle is quite a piece of work, starting with the sleek aluminum design and ending with its ability to speak several different languages. However, the device only comes in two, rather cold colors – black and silver.

The iPod, as Apple itself claims, is not only a music player, but also an accessory. Folks have embraced the idea of “wearing” the devices, hence Apple's efforts of staying on top of their demands. Why Apple chose to launch the new shuffle in just two colors remains a mystery. Still, the company may introduce fresh designs once sales take off.

So, for now, those who like to match their daily outfits still have the option to buy the old shuffle model that comes in five vibrant colors. The 2GB model can put up to 500 songs in your pocket, and sports “intensely colorful anodized aluminum,” which “complements the simple design of iPod shuffle,” according to Apple. The 1GB model (240 songs) costs $49.
