Cybercriminals store the phishing pages on free website hosting services

Some phishing scams are so efficient that they’re kept active by cybercriminals for many years. One perfect example is the old “Mailbox Server Alert!!!” scam that’s been doing the rounds since early 2011.

The malicious emails read something like this:

“Your two incoming mails were placed on pending status due to the recent upgrade in our database. In order to receive the messages kindly click on this link: [link]

Login with your correct Webmail information's and wait for responds from our date base service.”

This variant of the scam has been submitted to millersmiles.co.uk on Friday and the phishing site that hides behind the link is still active.

The phishing website, stored on a site that offers free hosting, is not very complex from a design standpoint, yet it can be highly efficient.

It doesn’t offer any explanations. It simply instructs users to enter their usernames, email addresses and associated passwords. Once the information is handed over to the crooks, victims are taken to a page that says the operation has been successful.

If you’re a victim of this scam, change your passwords immediately and be on the lookout for any suspicious emails that might land in your inbox.
