It happens in Rapid City

OK, I admit, this is not so related to computers, but I was shocked when I first read this piece of news. You must be sick to call somebody and tell him his sister was hurt in an accident although nothing happened. You know, some people might suffer heart attacks caused by these stupid pranks. But let's get back to the subject. Keloland.com informs that a phone scam has been discovered in Rapid City and the local police has already confirmed it, but there are only a few details about the entire scheme.

It seems like some residents have already beenfooled by the scammers, who called and informed them that one of their relatives had been hurt in an accident. In order to find more information about the accident, the victims had to enter a code on the phone. Just after the code has been entered, the attackers could connect to their phone account and "charge calls to them," it is mentioned in the article published today on Keloland.com.

Although the same source reports that the scammers were reported to be somewhere in Mexico, I wonder if it's really possible to find them.

Some time ago, I received a similar SMS message on my mobile phone, which informed me that I won a car. All I had to do was to send another message, containing a certain text to the number they provided in order to be able to get the prize. 'Suuuure!' I said. After a few days, I read an article in a local newspaper reporting that some fraudsters were arrested after they had attempted to get free phone credits, by tricking people that they have won exciting prizes.

As you can see, these scams are easily migrating from the virtual world, into the offline domain, as the malicious people are always attempting to earn some free money without doing anything. And this is the best example. The only problem is that it's illegal and in case they get caught, they might spend their next few years among criminals, thieves and pedophiles.
