This February 18, Denmark-based energy company Dong Energy announced plans to quadruple the size of an offshore wind farm currently operating in Liverpool Bay. Furthermore, it said that it had selected Vestas Wind Systems as its preferred supplier for this initiative.

Information shared with the public says that, for the time being, the Burbo Bank offshore wind farm comprises 25 turbines whose energy generating capacity amounts to 90 megawatts.

The energy company plans to have another 32 turbines set in place in the area, and expects that their output will be one of 258 megawatts.

This means that the Burbo Bank offshore wind farm will switch from having a capacity of 90 megawatts, as it has had ever since 2007, when the initial project was completed, to having one of 348 megawatts, Business Green reports.

According to the same source, the new turbines that said offshore farm is planned to be equipped with in the not so distant future are Vestas Wind System V164 8-megawatt machines.

These turbines are currently the biggest produced and marketed by the company, and Dong Energy is said to be the first company ever to place an order for them.

Commenting on this partnership between the two companies, Samuel Leupold, executive vice president of Dong Energy, stated as follows:

“The performance of the 8MW turbine from Vestas is very promising. I see this as a very concrete step towards reducing the cost of electricity from offshore wind.”

“A competitive market for all components is essential to accomplishing this. I look forward to working with Vestas and the other members of our supply chain to find further reductions in the cost of electricity,” he went on to say.

Dong Energy says that, should it manage to secure approval for this project, work on expanding the Burbo Bank offshore wind farm in Liverpool Bay will begin sometime in the second half of 2016.
