It has been revealed that Apple’s latest iPhone OS update has disabled the popular tethering hack that allows your computer to access the Internet via your iPhone’s cell connection. MMS messaging, also enabled by the hack, is just as affected by the installation of iPhone OS 3.1.

Apple introduced iPhone OS 3.1 for iPhone and iPod touch (OS 3.1.1) at its latest iPod event (“It's only rock and roll”), delivering enhancements and fixes (including security fixes), on both platforms. The company thus made available downloads for the following files:

- iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (241 MB) – first-gen iPhone;
- iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (242 MB) – iPhone 3G;
- iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw (306.2 MB); iPhone 3GS;
- iPod1,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) – iPod touch, first generation;
- iPod2,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) - iPod touch second generation;
-  iPod3,1_3.1.1_7C145_Restore.ipsw (unknown file size) - iPod touch third generation.

Soon after iPhone owners with update-itchy fingers installed the new software, reports hit the Internet with bad news for jailbroken users, as well as for those who used hacks to enable tethering or MMS on their devices. After updating its PwnageTool application that currently supports jailbreaking first-generation devices and the iPhone 3G, the iPhone Dev Team posted an update on its blog saying that, “As of 3.1, the *.ipcc carrier bundles are signed, and you can no longer force tethering capability simply by crafting your own bundle.” According to the team, “The good news is this obstacle can probably be overcome by virtue of the jailbreak.  But so far that extra hack is not part of the PwnageTool custom IPSW creation.”

However, Pete Mortensen over at Cult Of Mac reveals that, “Unlike some reports, my tethering menu survived the transition, but my Visual Voicemail went down in the process.” He had to choose between the two and eventually went for a functional Visual Voicemail, cutting the life support for tethering at his next sync with iTunes.

It should be illegal for them to change things on a phone that I onw without my permission. Imagine that Ford came to your house and said you can not have a CD changer unless you buy our system. Same thing here!!!!

Apple / AT&T fat pigs controlling things they should not be allowed to touch.

Seriously! To take the analogy even deeper it would be like chevron coming to your house and taking out your cd changer for not buying
premium fuel. AT&T doesn't even own or
make the iPhone! They just control the stuff that runs it! Is nobody else paying attention to AT&T and it's ongoing clown act...?

I did not update my software because I was going to lose my JB. But I have the Hack for the Tethering, and I have VVM and also my MMS. No problems here, using 3gs 3.0.1 software.

Your apparent resistance to authority is pretty obvious, and ridiculous. Apple provides regular updates for iPhone/iPod, and you as the consumer *choose* to download them. If your worried that they will take away your completely necessary and *Illegal* tethering capabilities, maybe you should do some research before updating.

it was apple who advertised new iPhone firmware 3.0 as enabling tethering, I wonder how do I tether my phone right now with the 3.1 firmware considering it disabled all tethering options even though my carrier has no problems with me tethering.

Also why should some one has to research for an update? It's irrelevant if I research or not, at the end of the day Im losing an option which apple advertised that my phone was capable of. Now 3.1 feels more like a downgrade rather than an upgrade. So please don't try to justify apple or/and AT&Ts forcing of how we should use our phones just so they can make couple more coins of us.

Apple I paid 800 dollars for MY iPhone. So let me use MY phone however I wanna use it.

I am not worried, our Geeks are better than their Geeks. Some one will get our tethering back! Unlimited usage should mean unlimited. Why shouldn't I be able to use my phone to access the internet on my computer? I am already paying for it! With all the free access out there, we only use it in rural areas. Why should we be punished because we are not in a city with free WIFI?
