The latest software upgrade for AT&T's Samsung Captivate was rolled out back in February, but nothing major has been deployed since then.

The so-called KB1 update pushed by AT&T several months ago, upgraded Captivate's software to Android 2.2 Froyo, but also added new features and enhancements.

However, as Google continue to release the new versions of its mobile platform it was a question of time when these update will be available for carrier-branded Android smartphones.

Unfortunately, AT&T is not among the carriers that is quick to offer the latest Android updates released by Google, on the contrary.

Samsung Captivate is one of those old but reliable Android smartphones that are still waiting silently to receive the Gingerbread upgrade.

Although AT&T has yet to give an estimate to Gingerbread's release, official ROMs for Samsung Captivate have been spotted in the last few months.

Even though this confirms the fact that Google and Samsung are actively working on a Gingerbread update for the Samsung Captivate, it does not give us any clues regarding its release timeframe.

An Android 2.3.3 ROM for Samsung Captivate leaked two months ago, but recently an updated ROM has surfaced courtesy to the guys over at XDA.

I897UCKH3 is the latest Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread official ROM that has just emerged via XDA forum user Przekret.

His source seems to be Samsung's Firmware Update Server (FUS), but how he managed to pull it from the server is still unknown.

Obviously, this is a stock version of the ROM and can be flashed with Odin, but it will unroot the smartphone, so it's better to wait until it can be rooted and repackaged.

It will be interesting to see how much longer it will take Samsung to deliver this update to Captivate users, especially that the handset maker's calendar for this fall is pretty full with lots of new devices to release.
