14 DAY TRIAL // Windows 10 will come with a free version of Office specifically optimized for touch, and according to Microsoft itself, a pre-installed copy of the productivity suite will be available on tablets and smartphones running the new operating system from the get-go.
With the new Office, Microsoft tried to bring the productivity suite in the Modern UI and allow users to perform the same tasks as on the desktop with touch-optimized features, but without affecting usability in any way.
That's why one of the biggest changes is that this version of Office looks very similar to the one on the desktop and comes with the signature Ribbon-based UI and other visual tweaks that you are already familiar with.
Stand-alone apps in the store
Just like it currently happens on iOS, Office tools will be available separately from the Windows Store, so you can only download Word, Excel, or PowerPoint individually and thus avoid installing the entire Office suite.
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint all come with the essential feature package available on the desktop and allow you to work with documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on both tablets and smartphones. Microsoft promises that the working experience won't be affected in any way by the small screen size of your phone because of the visual tweaks it made to the product.
One important addition is Outlook Mail, the familiar email client that can now be used in the Modern UI as well.
“Crafting emails has never been easier or more powerful, with the familiar and rich capability of Microsoft Word built into the authoring experience. Simply insert tables, add pictures and use bullets and color to get your point across. Keep up with your inbox with new touch gestures that help you read, sort, flag and archive your mail,” Microsoft said.
Obviously, all of them will be completely free of charge for those running Windows 10 and they will make their debut in a Technical Preview build in the coming months.
