Microsoft launched Office for Android several months ago, but the application was only available for tablets. The good news is that beginning today Android smartphone users will be able to get Office on their devices as well.

The Redmond-based company has just announced the new Microsoft Office for Android is now available for smartphones. The application has been especially optimized for touch and designed to work while on the move.

The package contains the preview for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, which might or might not be compatible with all Android phones.

The new version of Office apps “combine the familiar look, feel and quality of Office with a touch-friendly experience designed for Android phones.”

As Microsoft points out, these apps are still in beta testing, so they haven't been listed on Google Play Store yet. However, developers state that by bringing these apps to Preview first allows Android phone users to get a glimpse on what's to come.

In addition, the feedback received from users will help Microsoft improve the application experience on a wide range of Android smartphones.

This is how Microsoft was able to increase the quality of Office for Android tablets since its release back in January, and now it hopes to be able to do the same with the smartphone version.

Since Office for Android Phones Preview is not yet available for download on Google Play store, you will have to join the Office for Android community.

Once you join the community, choose to become a tester by clicking the links to the Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Then, you will have to wait for Google Play to replicate permissions, which it might take up to four hours.

It's also worth mentioning that the Office Mobile application for Android phones will still appear in the Google Play Store during the Preview.

The application might be replaced after the Preview version of Office for Android phones exits beta, but more details on Microsoft's plans for this app will be shared later this year.
