14 DAY TRIAL // Although it has already released Office 2010 and is hard at work on the next major iteration of its productivity suite, Microsoft continues to tend to older releases of the product.
Case in point: Update for Microsoft Office Word 2003 (KB979045). According to the Redmond company, the refresh is designed to boost the reliability and speed of the Word component of Office 2003.
The software giant informed that customers still running Office 2003 need to have already implemented Service Pack 3 (SP3) if they’re looking to download and deploy Update for Microsoft Office Word 2003 (KB979045).
“This update contains stability and performance improvements,” Microsoft revealed.
“This update will affect a particular custom XML tagging implementation. For technical details on the affected custom XML tagging functionality, please see KB978951,” the company added.
KB978951 refers to an update offered by Microsoft at the start of 2010 to customers in the US, changing a particular custom XML tagging implementation, after the company lost an intellectual property infringement suit.
At that time, the refresh was designed to modify Office Word 2007 and 2003 so that they were no longer capable of reading the custom XML markup within .docx, .docm, or .xml files.

Download the .exe file by clicking on the Download button at the top of the page, and then save the file to your hard disk drive.
It is recommended that you quit any programs you are running. In Windows Explorer, double-click the .exe file that you saved to your hard disk drive, and follow the instructions on the screen,” the Redmond company explained.
Of course, customers can now also download trial releases of Office 2010 and test drive them free of charge. Each trial edition of Office 2010 RTM can be used for 60 days before it expires.
