The app was expected to be released by the end of the month

The Office Universal app was officially introduced last about two weeks ago when Microsoft said it would be available in Windows 10 Mobile at some point.

Since the new version of Office for smartphones and tablets is compatible with Windows 10, many expected that an early version of it would be included in a Technical Preview build.

Unfortunately, the last Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview dates from about one week ago and doesn't bring the highly anticipated Office Universal app.

In fact, this is one of the known issues that Microsoft confirmed it would be addressed in future Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview builds.

The Redmond-based company said that the Office Universal app would certainly be available on Windows 10 Mobile by the end of April.

Unfortunately, it's already May 4 and this hasn't happened. Microsoft did not offer any details on why it had to delay the release of Office Universal app on Windows 10 Mobile.

The app may be delivered as part of a new Windows 10 Mobile build

It may have something to do with the fact that the company has just wrapped up the BUILD 2015 conference, one of the most important events for developers.

Anyway, it looks like Windows Insiders won't have to wait too long for Office Universal app, as Mary Jo Foley reports a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the company planned to release the application early this week.

This means that later today or perhaps tomorrow, Office Universal app should be available for download to all Lumia smartphones with Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview installed.

It's worth mentioning that Microsoft hasn't decided yet whether it will deliver Office Universal app as standalone update, or as part of a new Windows 10 Mobile Technical Preview build.

In this regard, Gabriel Aul announced last week that the next Windows 10 build for phones will arrive later than originally planned. This may or may not have something to do with the inclusion of Office Universal app in the next Windows 10 Mobile build.
