On Wednesday, Redmond-based software giant Microsoft released the final version of the desktop Office 2010, along with which it made available a flavor aimed at mobile phones, namely Office Mobile 2010. The owners of a device powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 can now take advantage of the Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editing capabilities of the application while on the go.

Being released in conjunction with the desktop version, Office Mobile 2010 offers users compatibility between the solutions. “Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 define the future of productivity,” Stephen Elop, president, Microsoft Business Division, commented on the launch. “With the 2010 set of products, organizations will save, innovate and grow as their people benefit from working across the PC, phone and browser.”

Among the features that Office Mobile 2010 comes around with, we can count SharePoint integration (users can easily access and edit documents stored on a Microsoft SharePoint 2010 site), Bluetooth controller mode for PowerPoint presentations, access to SharePoint Workspace Mobile, the possibility to easily take notes on the phone and to insert voice clips or pictures in them, and others more.

“Effective today, Office Mobile 2010 will be available for free via Windows Phone Marketplace for all Windows Mobile 6.5 phones with a previous version of Office Mobile. People using Office Mobile 2010 can perform lightweight editing of Office documents and take notes on the go. With Office Mobile, people can work with Office documents stored on their phone, attached to an e-mail, and can browse, edit, and update documents stored on a Microsoft SharePoint 2010 site. SharePoint intranet sites and communities also help people collaborate, regardless of location,” Microsoft announced.

According to the company, the new Microsoft Office Mobile 2010 is meant to offer the powerful Office 2010 tools on Windows phones. The solution comes with a rich interface specifically designed to fit the small screen of handsets. Those Windows Mobile 6.5 phone users who already have Office Mobile on their devices can upgrade to the new flavor for free, the company concluded.
