The first major upgrade for Office 2010 has been released to manufacturing and is now available for download to end users.

Both Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2460049) 32-bit Edition and Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2460049) 64-bit Edition went live on the Microsoft Download Center on June 27th, 2011.

As it's always the case with service pack releases from Microsoft, all Office 2010 upgrades can be downloaded and installed free of charge.

According to information displayed by Office 2010 components after the deployment of SP1, users that upgrade will be running Build 14.0.6023.1000.

Microsoft offered a few details about the evolution of its desktop productivity suite from Office 2010 RTM to SP1 back in mid-May 2011, and Softpedia users can read about them here.

What must be underlined is that, for the most part, Office 2010 SP1 is nothing more than a standard service pack. Upgrading to SP1 won’t introduce any major changes in the productivity suite.

The software giant explains:

“Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) provides the latest updates for Office 2010. This service pack includes two main categories of fixes:

- Previously unreleased fixes that were made specifically for this service pack. In addition to general product fixes, these fixes include improvements in stability, performance, and in security.

- All the public updates that were released through June 2011, and all the cumulative updates that were released through April 2011.”

The Redmond company did share a range of additional SP1 downloads and resources related to Office 2010 as well as solutions accompanying the productivity suite.

Make sure to keep your eyes on this space as I will provide updates all day along about the first upgrade to Office 2010.
