A new development milestone of the next iteration of the Office System has made it into the wild and is now available for download via various illegal third-party sources including torrent trackers. Microsoft has kept the development of Office 2010 under a tight lid since it released the Technical Preview of the productivity suite earlier this year. Still, silence must not be mistaken for inactivity as far as one of the main milk cows for the Redmond company is concerned. The latest leaked Build of Office 2010 is an illustrative example of the fact that the successor of Office 2007 has indeed been evolving.

The official Office 2010 Technical Preview went live in the first half of July 2009. Since then there was yet another build of the productivity suite that leaked to BitTorrent websites. Build 14.0.4417.1000 made its way into the wild at the end of August 2009. The latest leaked development milestone Build 14.0.4514.1009 makes evident Microsoft’s efforts to help contain leaks.

In this regard, the Redmond company has changed the activation process, which now precedes the installation of the product. At the same time, the software giant is apparently keeping testers on a very short leash and is delivering unique activation product keys for each member of the testing program, including its own employees.

In this regard, in addition to the leaked bits of Office 2010 Beta Build 14.0.4514.1009, a few activation product keys have also been published into the wild. Keys designed to activate both the 32-bit (x86) and the 64-bit (x65) versions of Office 2010 Beta Build 14.0.4514.1009 have been leaked. Wzor, the Russian website that is the source of the leak, explained that Office 2010 Build 14.0.4514.1009 would end up as the Beta 2 development milestone of Office 2007’s successor, and that release is expected at Tech-Ed Europe in Berlin, Germany in November 2009.

Since the debut of the initial official testing program for Office 2010, Microsoft has also debuted the Technical Preview for Office 2010 Office Web Apps. The Redmond company has also revealed that it expects Office 2010 to become available in spring 2010.
