In approximately one month, Microsoft will debut the next phase of the availability of Office 2007 Service Pack 2. In this regard, in the week of September 21st, 2009, Office 2007 SP2 RTM will become available via Automatic Updates. The Redmond company revealed that it would serve automatic upgrades to the second service pack to all Office 2007 users with AU enabled. At the same time, the roll-out process would be progressive, and was designed to last for at least a few months before it would be completed, the software giant indicated.

“This is advance notice that we will start providing SP2 for the 2007 Microsoft Office system via Microsoft Update’s Automatic Update the week of September 21, 2009. This continues our commitment to providing a minimum of 30 days notice prior to distributing service packs via this method. The availability will happen gradually over time, completing in early February. This is in response to customer requests as well as to ensure that our service infrastructure can meet the demand for the service pack,” a member of the Office Sustained Engineering team revealed.

Microsoft made the second service pack for Office 2007 available for download at the end of April 2009. Applauded by the Redmond company as a significant stability, performance and interoperability upgrade for Office 2007, SP2 has been up for grabs and manual integration since April 28th. By giving the green light to the automatic upgrades of Office 2007 SP2, Microsoft attempts to ensure that all users of its productivity suite will enjoy added benefits such as default support for a larger number of document formats and standards including Open XML, ODF and PDF.

At the same time, the company is pressing onward with the development of its next iteration of the Office System. Office 2010 is currently in Technical Preview stage, with a public Beta planned for release later this year. Microsoft pointed to the first half of 2010 for the release to manufacturing of Office 2010.
