Reports indicate that Microsoft has already compiled Office 15 Milestone 2, although there is no official word from the Redmond company confirming this.

Obviously, following the finalization of Office 2010, Microsoft has started working not only on the first service pack for the current versions of the productivity suite, but also on the next major iteration of Office.

Since Office 2010 was built under the codename Office 14, its successor is referred to internally as Office 15.

According to Winreview, Office 15 has reached the Milestone 2 (M2) stage of the development process.

The source notes that the software giant already wrapped up Build 15.0.2621.1000. But this piece of information needs to be taken with a grain of salt since the Redmond company is not sharing any details on the successor of Office 2010 with the public at this point in time.

But it appears that Windows 8, the successor of Windows 7, is joined by Microsoft’s other big cash cow on its way to M3.

In the past years, the company has been the adept of a very hush-hush policy when it comes down to talking products that are yet to be released.

As a general rule, both the Windows and Office teams only share details about upcoming versions when the feature-set for the upcoming products is complete and will make it without any changes in the RTM Builds.

An official deadline for the general availability of Office 2010 wasn’t provided by Microsoft, and unlike for Windows 8, there seems not to be any real consensus related to a GA date.

While some speculate that Office 15 could end up as Office 2012 and be released as soon as next year, there are also voices which point out that the software giant could push the release of Office 2010’s successor until 2013, or even 2014.
