Mobile phone users in the UK are advised by Ofcom – the independent regulator of UK communications industries –  to be on the lookout these days for a phishing scam that’s spread via SMS messages.

According to Ofcom representatives, the targeted individuals receive SMSs in which they’re instructed to visit a website and provide personal information.

The notifications, which come from a six digit mobile phone number and are signed by the “Ofcom Communications Team,” are part of a cybercriminal scheme that’s designed to steal information from unsuspecting users.

Authorities have been alerted.

Recipients of such text messages are urged not to click on the links. Instead, they’re advised to file a report with Action Fraud via the organization’s website or by calling 0300 123 2040.

If you already fell for it and provided your details on the malicious site, you must contact the Information Commissioner’s Office.
